Development Standing Committee: Main Responsibilities

1. Development Planning and Project Formulation

  • Development Planning: Plan projects for the overall development of the Grama Panchayat.

  • Socio-Economic Planning: Formulate programs aimed at social and economic growth.

  • Spatial Planning: Plan taking into consideration the geographical characteristics of the area.

  • Play a major role in preparing the panchayat's annual plans and presenting them in Grama Sabhas to gain approval.

2. Major Development Sectors

This committee oversees activities in the critical development sectors of the panchayat, which include:

  • Agriculture: Matters related to agricultural production, seed distribution, fertilizers, and irrigation.

  • Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development: Animal husbandry programs and the growth of the dairy sector.

  • Soil Conservation: Schemes to maintain soil fertility.

  • Social Forestry: Tree planting and environmental awareness programs.

  • Minor Irrigation: Implementation of small irrigation projects.

  • Fisheries: Development of the fisheries sector.

  • Small-Scale Industries: Promotion of local industries.

  • Public Works: Construction and maintenance of roads and buildings under the panchayat (while a separate committee may sometimes exist for this, development-related matters fall under this committee).

  • Housing: Implementation and supervision of housing schemes.

3. Energy and Infrastructure

  • Rural Electrification and Non-Conventional Energy Sources: Installation and maintenance of streetlights and other energy conservation projects.

4. Project Implementation and Supervision

  • Ensure that all projects falling under the committee are completed in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Review project progress and make corrections if necessary.

  • Coordinate activities according to the suggestions of working groups and Grama Sabhas.

In short, determining the direction of the panchayat's development, planning the projects for it, and ensuring their implementation are the vital responsibilities of the Development Standing Committee.
